Midfielder Kevin Nolan has left West Ham by mutual consent after four years with the club.

The 33-year-old scored 31 goals in his 157 games with the Hammers after joining them from Newcastle United in the summer of 2011.

Nolan captained West Ham to promotion to the Premier League, via the play-offs, and was their leading scorer in 2012/13 and 2013/14.

But he did not start any of West Ham's first three league games this season under new boss Slaven Bilic, with Mark Noble taking over the captaincy.

Nolan said: "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at West Ham United and will take some great memories with me. I'm now looking forward to the next challenge playing for a new club."

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday morning, Bilic wished Nolan all the best and revealed he was unable to promise him the regular football he desired.

When asked about that subject, Bilic said: "That is basically the only reason. In the end, it is good for both parties.

"It was not only this week. We had a few chats with Kevin, now he's leaving and I can only say a big thanks to him for the club because he was a great captain and a great professional.

"Even in the short period I experienced working with him, he was a brilliant professional, a hard worker and I wish him well on behalf of the staff, the players and the club."
