Celtic have handed former West Ham striker Carlton Cole an 18-month contract following his recent stint training with the club.

The 32-year-old, who has been capped seven times by England, had been out of contract since last summer when he left the Hammers at the end of his contract.

Cole started his career at Chelsea and spent time on loan at Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa before enjoying two spells with the Hammers.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila has been keen to vary his options in attack, and has been impressed by the Londoner during his spell at Lennoxtown where his trial period was extended because of an injury.

"This is my first time, really, going north of the Watford Gap," Cole told Sky Sports News HQ. "I've been trying to get a feel of the city and I know I am at a big club.

"I am a different player to Leigh [Griffiths]. He's a nice nippy little player and I am more of a big powerhouse, so hopefully we can play together up front at some stage and make a nuisance of ourselves.

"They were waiting to see what level of fitness I was at. I got a little knock and had to get a scan, but now I am back training with the team so hopefully I can get back in as soon as possible."

Cole could end up playing Old Firm games in his second season with the club, with Rangers favourites to gain promotion to the Premiership, and big matches like just add to Cole's excitement at joining the club.

"Everyone keeps on reminding me how special a day like that is, and there are European nights as well, but the main thing for me is signing for Celtic, playing for the badge and making sure I give a good account of myself to the fans."
