We look at January Deadline Day signings who struggled to match their great expectations...
Fernando Torres
A British record transfer fee of £50m was completed by Chelsea on Deadline Day in January 2011 to bring Liverpool ace Torres to the club. Torres scored just once in his first half of the season at the club, then just another 19 goals in total over a span of 92 appearances.
Torres did win the Champions League with Chelsea, though, famously scoring a breakaway goal in their semi-final at Barcelona.
Andy Carroll
With Torres leaving the club, Liverpool needed a replacement up front. Andy Carroll was considered the suitable replacement as he joined for £35m just minutes before the 11pm deadline.
Carroll became the most expensive English footballer in history at the time, but the target man's injury problems meant he did not play a game until he appeared as a substitute against Manchester United on March 6.
After scoring just twice more in the rest of the season, Carroll managed four goals in 35 appearances the following year before being sent out on loan to West Ham in the summer of 2012.
Andrej Kramaric
A prolific goalscorer in Croatia, Andrej Kramaric joined Leicester for a club record transfer fee of £9m in last year's transfer window with the hope he'd help Nigel Pearson's side out of their relegation troubles. However, he made 15 appearances and scored just three times.
Under Claudio Ranieri, Kramaric failed to secure a starting role and was subsequently loaned out to Bundesliga club Hoffenheim earlier this month.
Kostas Mitroglou
Kostas Mitroglou joined Fulham on Deadline Day in January 2014 for a club record fee of £12m after a prolific half season at Olympiacos, where he scored 14 goals in 12 matches, but injuries meant he only appeared three times for Fulham and failed to score a goal.
The club were relegated with Felix Magath in charge, and Mitroglou returned on loan to Olympiacos and then Benfica.
Chris Samba
An Anzhi Makhachkala director said QPR were 'out of their minds' to spend £12.5m on Chris Samba, who reportedly picked up £100,000 a week when he joined Harry Redknapp's side, who were in the midst of a relegation battle in 2013.
Samba made 10 appearances for Queens Park Rangers, and was especially criticised in a 3-2 defeat against Fulham. QPR were relegated and Anzhi signed Samba back for £12m in the summer.
Kim Kallstrom
Kim Kallstrom, who had twice won the French title with Lyon, joined Arsenal on Deadline Day of January 2014 on a six-month loan from Spartak Moscow. However, the Swedish midfielder arrived with a back injury and only made four appearances for the Gunners.
Kallstrom said that he enjoyed his spell at the club and hoped once his loan expired that Arsene Wenger would re-sign him on a season-long loan, but the deal never came to fruition.
Benni McCarthy
West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola snapped up Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy on Deadline Day of the 2010 winter window.
However, over the following 14 months, the South African made just 11 appearances, failed to score and eventually settled on a £1.5m pay off to terminate his contract.
Afonso Alves
Afonso Alves' prolific goalscoring at Eredivisie club Heerenveen made him a transfer target across Europe and in January 2008, shortly before the window closed, Middlesbrough completed a club record £12m deal to take the Brazilian to Teesside.
However, Alves was unable to reproduce his goalscoring form at Middlesbrough and, after scoring just four times in 31 league appearances in 2008/09, Boro were relegated to the Championship.
