Mauro Zarate has joined Watford on a two-and-a-half year deal from Fiorentina.

The 29-year-old returns to the Premier League having spent previous spells in the top flight with West Ham, QPR and Birmingham City.

Sky sources understood that Watford wanted to hold back on registering the 29-year-old until he has served the first game of a three-match suspension for a red card in the Coppa Italia.

Zarate's ban kicked in on Tuesday - when Fiorentina were playing Napoli - meaning he will now have to sit out just two Watford games, Saturday's FA Cup trip to Millwall and Tuesday's Premier League game at Arsenal.

The Argentine forward would be eligible for a debut when Walter Mazzari's side host Burnley on February 4.
