Championship round-up: Huddersfield beat Newcastle; Fulham, Bristol City win again

Jack Payne scored a winner with eight minutes remaining as Newcastle suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield at St James' Park.

Newcastle's start to life in England's second tier is not going according to plan, with defeat against the Terriers coming after an opening-day loss to Fulham.

But Huddersfield are off to a great start and sit alongside Fulham and Bristol City at the top of the table, with all three clubs having won their opening two games.

Aston Villa romped to a 3-0 win at home to Rotherham, Rudy Gestede scoring twice as they secured their first victory since February.

Newcastle, Burton, Preston, Leeds and Blackburn all remain without a point after two games.

There was plenty of drama at Newcastle, where a sell-out crowd of 52,000 watched Huddersfield leave with the three points.

Nahki Wells gave David Wagner's side the lead on the stroke of half-time with a first-time finish from a left-wing cross. but Newcastle were awarded a penalty just after the hour when Mark Hudson handled as a Matt Ritchie cross bounced around dangerously.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle had his penalty saved by Danny Ward but the rebound fell very kindly for the forward, who was able to nod the ball into the net.

However, Huddersfield got the winner on the counter-attack, Kasey Palmer setting up fellow substitute Payne, who finished really well, taking his time before calmly picking out the far corner of the net to make an immediate and decisive impact.

New Wolves manager, Walter Zenga, secured his first Championship win as the hosts beat Reading 2-0 at Molineux.

Left-back Matt Doherty got the opener in the 42nd minute, cutting inside from the left before unleashing a powerful shot, and Joe Mason doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half, heading home from a corner.

Reading could only manage one shot on target all match, and that came from long range, as boss Jaap Stam suffered his first defeat in his new role.

Having endured a miserable Premier League campaign last term, Aston Villa had begun life under Roberto Di Matteo with a pair of defeats.

But they bounced back against Rotherham at Villa Park, Gestede heading them into a 21st-minute lead and then finishing off a neat move in stoppage-time at the end of the first half.

Jack Grealish scored a delightful third, six minutes from time, dribbling into the area and then rounding the goalkeeper before tapping home.

Last season's League One play-off winners Barnsley picked up their first Championship victory of the season, defeating Derby 2-0 at Oakwell.

The Tykes took the lead in slightly fortuitous fashion in the 11th-minute, Conor Hourihane's shot from the edge of the box coming back off the inside of the post, only to hit goalkeeper Scott Carson's leg and rebound into the net.

And the hosts made it 2-0 just after half-time, Hourihane swinging over a free-kick from the right which was met by Alfie Mawson, who found the net with a glancing header.

There was disappointment for Leeds supporters at Elland Road, Birmingham winning 2-1 to end a seven-match winless run in the league.

Leeds started well and hit the crossbar, but fell behind when Charlie Taylor (15) prodded the ball into his own net as he challenged Jacques Maghoma.

The hosts got a deserved leveller after 27 minutes, Haidi Sacko's shot from a narrow angle somehow getting past Tomasz Kuszczak.

However, Michael Morrison (55) shot home from close range to restore the Birmingham lead and Kuszczak pulled off two good reflex saves in the closing stages as the visitors held on.

Wigan defeated Blackburn 3-0 at the DW Stadium to record their first win of the season.

Will Grigg (14) scored with a looping header from a mishit Max Power shot to give them the lead and Nick Powell (33) then scored with a fine free-kick from out wide on the left.

Fulham made it back-to-back wins with an impressive 2-1 victory over Preston at Deepdale.

Sone Aluko (33) headed them into the lead from close range after an attempted Preston clearance deflected into the danger zone and Matt Smith (67) doubled the advantage at the second attempt after his initial shot was saved.

Callum Robinson (71) pulled one back with a brilliant header into the roof of the net but Preston could not find an equaliser and remain without a point.

There was high drama at the Pirelli Stadium, where Bristol City defeated Burton 2-1, thanks to a double from on-loan Chelsea man Tammy Abraham.

The youngster bundled his first goal home from close range just before half-time after Burton failed to clear a Hordur Magnusson throw-in.

But Burton levelled with just two minutes left, Tom Naylor arriving at the back post to side-foot the ball into the net.

However, in the fifth minute of injury-time, Abraham forced the ball home from a Jonathan Kodjia cross to win the game for the Robins.
