Burnley remain keen to sign Brentford defender James Tarkowski in the winter transfer window after having an initial bid rejected last week, according to Sky sources.

It is understood the Lancashire club had an offer of £2.5m plus add-ons rejected for the centre-back but it is believed he could be allowed to move for a fee of around £4m-£5m.

Sources close to Manchester-born Tarkowski, 23, have told Sky Sports News HQ he is open to returning to the north of England.

And there are a number of other Championship clubs who are interested in him, including Sheffield Wednesday.

Burnley were interested in signing Tarkowski last summer along with the then Brentford striker Andre Gray, whom they signed for £9m.

The Clarets could only afford one, with the Bees asking for as much as £7m for Tarkowski, and decided on Gray, who has scored 15 goals in 22 appearances since his move.

Tarkowski was signed for Brentford by former manager and sporting director Mark Warburton - now in charge at Rangers - from Oldham in 2014.
