Forest Green boss Mark Cooper believes Ethan Pinnock is destined for the Premier League one day and new club Barnsley is the best place for him to develop.
Pinnock, 24, has signed a three-year deal with the Tykes following a move from the newly-promoted Sky Bet League Two side for an undisclosed fee.
Pinnock had a year left on his Forest Green contract but Cooper says the club is "supporting his wish to play Championship football".
"We were the perfect club for Ethan to develop his talent," he said. "And I know he'll be keeping an eye on our progress in League Two. I believe he is destined for the Premier League."
Pinnock's new manager at the Tykes, Paul Heckingbottom, said: "This is exactly what we want at this football club; young and hungry players who are constantly wanting to improve themselves and further their career at Barnsley.
"He joins a talented group and I am pleased to get another deal done."
Pinnock said: "I know we have a young side and I really like the way the manager wants to play. This is a club that will help you progress as a player.
"I would also like to thank my old manager Mark Cooper for trusting me week-in-week-out to play, as well as coaching me and helping me develop as a player, to get me to the next level."
