What they need...

Only three sides scored more goals than Hull last season in the Championship, while only one side conceded fewer, which suggests they do not necessarily have an obvious area of weakness. Instead, Steve Bruce - who has been linked with the England job over the summer - will hope to strengthen more generally ahead of the step up.

He has done very little so far in the market as the Tigers prepare for a fifth Premier League campaign, and much will depend on whether Abel Hernandez can take his second-tier form into the top flight. The Uruguayan netted 20 league goals last season, but managed just four in 26 as Hull were relegated in 2014/15. Don't be surprised to see reinforcements arrive up front.

Who are the targets?

Sky sources have confirmed Hull are one of a number of Premier League clubs chasing Hal Robson-Kanu after the striker's impressive performances for Wales at Euro 2016. The 27-year-old is a free agent after reaching the end of his contract at Reading last season.

Bordeaux's 29-year-old defender Lamine Sane has also been linked while Callum McManaman could join from West Brom. There could also be a move for Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason, who is seeking first-team opportunities away from White Hart Lane.

What the manager has said

"Since the play-off final, I have been in contact with our board of directors and other officials at the club on a regular basis, and I am confident we all understand what we need to do to be ready for the Premier League season ahead of us," said Bruce.

"We plan to make improvements to our squad in the coming weeks and a transfer budget and wage structure has been set by the board for the new campaign."

Danny Higginbotham's view

"They haven't done too much just yet, but they have players who have been there and done it before in the Premier League and Steve Bruce will be wanting to lean on their experience.

"I think it's important that when teams come back up, they don't go crazy straight away and try and replace five or six players. You've got to do it bit by bit until you get yourself settled in the Premier League so I'm sure that's something Bruce will want to do. He could maybe get another centre-forward and bring a bit more pace into the team."
