Bristol City have completed the signing of forward Matty Taylor from arch-rivals Bristol Rovers for an undisclosed fee.

Taylor has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Sky Bet Championship club and becomes the first player in 30 years to leave Rovers for City.

The 26-year-old had netted 19 times for Rovers this season, taking his tally to 67 goals in 132 matches for the League One club.

"I think we've got ourselves a natural goalscorer," City manager Lee Johnson told the club's official website.

"It's been interesting to watch his progress. He's scored goals at every level he's played at and his next challenge is to do that in the Championship.

"Having seen other goalscorers make that step up, Sam Winnall as an example, if you can put the ball in the right areas then they'll inevitably stick it in the net.

"It'll be a big step up in standard for him, but he's been able to deal with every challenge that's been thrown at him so far in his career."

Prior to the arrival of Taylor at Ashton Gate, Trevor Morgan was the last player to move from Rovers to City in 1987.

Taylor is likely to be in the stands to watch City host Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday and could make his debut in the home match against fellow strugglers Rotherham United on Saturday.

City currently sit in 21st place in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone.
