Daryl Murphy has joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United on a three-year deal.

Sky sources understand Forest have paid £2m to acquire the 34-year-old, who passed a medical on Thursday after flying back from Newcastle's pre-season training camp in Dublin.

Mark Warburton will hope Murphy can serve as a replacement for Britt Assombalonga, who joined Middlesbrough earlier this week.

Murphy joined Newcastle from Ipswich Town last summer but failed to find his best form at St James' Park, making just 15 appearances in the Championship and scoring five times.

His best season came in 2014/15 when he was top scorer in the Championship with 27 goals for the Tractor Boys.

The veteran forward has made 23 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, scoring once.
