Swansea and Aston Villa are in negotiations about a swap deal involving Neil Taylor and Jordan Ayew.
Ayew is currently on international duty with Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He scored in Ghana's victory over Democratic Republic of Congo at the weekend to book a semi-final showdown with Cameroon on Thursday.
Wales international Taylor has been a regular for the Swans this season and has 17 first-team appearances to his name during the current campaign.
Swansea boss Paul Clement said: "We brought Martin Olsson in from Norwich so we had three left-backs and I only need two.
"And we get a young offensive talent who will add to what we have. Ayew can play wide or through the middle and I like that versatility."
"It is not done yet, but it is close to being done. Neil has been a great servant to this club, but I feel it is the right time for a new challenge for him and he would like to take it."
Swansea have made three additions to their squad in the January transfer window.
They paid PSV Eindhoven a fee of £4m for Luciano Narsingh and £4.5m each for Tottenham's Tom Carroll and Martin Olsson from Norwich City.
Villa have also been very active this month, with manager Steve Bruce completing deals for five new additions.
Bruce has bolstered his midfield with the acquisition of Conor Hourihane (Barnsley), Henri Lansbury (Nottingham Forest) and Birkir Bjarnason from FC Basel.
Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has joined on loan from Manchester United and Barnsley full-back James Bree has also made the move to Villa Park.
