Clint Hill has been training with Chesterfield but the League Two side do not currently plan to offer him a contract, Sky Sports News understands.
Chesterfield are having to carefully manage their finances following relegation and it is understood a player will have to leave the club for any others to come in.
Hill is currently a free agent after one season at Scottish Premiership side Rangers, where he made 32 appearances and scored six goals.
In May, Hill to Sky Sports News that he wanted to continue playing for another season.
Hill said: "Personally I think I can still do a job. I want another year, I want to play somewhere so if anyone is watching and anyone wants an old centre-half, I'm available.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Rangers. It's a great club to play for, the fans are unbelievable. Personally I can't wait until they get back to the top because everyone in that club will deserve that."
Hill was brought to the club by former manager Mark Warburton and sporting director Frank McParland, who are both now at Nottingham Forest.
The 38-year-old became a stalwart at Queens Park Rangers during a six-year spell, winning promotion to the Premier League twice and making 185 appearances for the club.
Hill began his career as a trainee at Tranmere, where he broke into the first team before spells at Oldham, Stoke and then Crystal Palace.
