Rotherham have held talks with former Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray over their managerial vacancy, while Neil Warnock is also in the running, Sky sources understand.
Neil Redfearn was sacked as Millers boss on Monday after he could only guide the club to one victory in eight matches as they tumbled into the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.
Nicky Eaden was subsequently named as caretaker manager but the south Yorkshire club are understood to be keen to have a permanent manager in place before Saturday's game with Birmingham at the New York Stadium.
Gray, who was in charge at Hillsborough for an 18-month spell from January 2014, is believed to have already held discussions with Rotherham over their vacant position.
Sky sources also understand Warnock, who has taken charge of a number of clubs during his managerial career, including Sheffield United and Leeds, will hold talks with Rotherham on Thursday evening.
Warnock's last role in football was caretaker manager of QPR prior to the arrival of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at Loftus Road.
The 67-year-old, who played for the Millers from 1969-1971, now lives in Cornwall and could be interested in taking on the role just until the end of the season with the remit of keeping them in the Championship.
Rotherham have also been linked with a move for Northampton boss Chris Wilder, while Paolo Di Canio was at one stage though to be in the running before his agent revealed that was not the case.
