Rotherham manager Alan Stubbs says leaving Scottish Championship side Hibs for the English Championship is the right step to take in his career

Rotherham United have appointed Alan Stubbs as their new manager, with the 44-year-old signing a three-year contract.

Stubbs takes charge of the Sky Bet Championship side after resigning as head coach of Hibernian, who he led to Scottish Cup glory last season.

Stubbs' assistant at Hibernian, John Doolan, will join him at Rotherham and has also signed a three-year deal.

Rotherham avoided relegation to League One last season after finishing their campaign strongly under Neil Warnock but the veteran manager then parted company with the Millers.

And it emerged on Tuesday night that Stubbs was willing to leave Hibs despite having a year left to run on his contract.

Negotiations over compensation then dragged on for almost 24 hours, and Stubbs and Doolan were eventually forced to quit their positions at Easter Road in order to force the move through.

Stubbs is fresh from leading the Edinburgh club to a first Scottish Cup in 114 years, after they beat Rangers 3-2 thanks to a dramatic late goal in the Hampden final, but he failed to achieve his primary target of guiding the club back to the Scottish Premiership.

And he now becomes Rotherham's third permanent manager in just eight months after Warnock decided not to extend his short-term stay.

A former defender for Bolton, Celtic and Everton, Stubbs leaves Hibernian after two seasons in charge, and John Hughes, Steve Evans and Stuart McCall have been mentioned as potential replacements.
