Motherwell are set to name Scotland assistant Mark McGhee as their new manager, according to Sky sources.

It is understood the 58-year-old former Motherwell boss has become their first-choice candidate and, while a deal is not yet complete, his appointment is set to be confirmed after he arrived at Fir Park on Tuesday afternoon.

McGhee managed Motherwell between 2007 and 2009 and ended a 13-year wait for European club competition, qualifying for the 2008-09 Europa League after finishing third in the Scottish Premiership.

He has been an instrumental part of Scotland's improvement under Gordon Strachan in recent years and is understood to have been targetted by Motherwell despite not actually applying for the vacant job himself.

Current caretaker boss Stephen Craigan will take charge of training for the final time on Tuesday, having ruled himself out of the running to succeed Ian Baraclough.

Baraclough was sacked last week having managed just two wins this season, relieved of his duties after less than a year in charge, and the Scottish Premiership club have received over 75 applications for the vacant position.

Former Well and Rangers boss Stuart McCall also ruled himself out of a return to the club but former Rotherham manager Steve Evans suggested he may be interested,

One of the club's former midfielders Simo Valakari has also been of interest, but Motherwell have been told by his current club SJK of Finland that they will not be able to talk to him until the conclusion of their domestic season later this month.
