Nigel de Jong has left AC Milan after his contract was cancelled and looks set to join Los Angeles Galaxy.

De Jong, 31, has made only five appearances for Milan this season and was left out of Sinisa Mihajlovic's squad for a 3-0 derby win over city rivals Inter Milan on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Times has reported De Jong has already signed for Galaxy and Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has confirmed talks with the MLS side are already under way.

A club statement on Monday, the final day of the winter transfer window in Italy, said: "AC Milan announces that Nigel de Jong's contract with the club has been mutually terminated today.

"AC Milan would like to thank the Dutchman for his determination, commitment and professionalism shown during his time with the red and black colours.

"We wish him all the success possible and all the very best for the next stage of his career."

The 31-year-old De Jong, a tough-tackling midfielder who has played in two World Cup campaigns, joined Milan in 2012 following a three and a half year spell at Manchester City.
