Borussia Dortmund are trying to re-sign Mario Gotze, Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed.
Gotze left for Bayern three years ago in a move that still rankles with some Dortmund supporters, who displayed a banner at a game in April making it clear they would not welcome him back.
But Germany's World Cup-winning midfielder could soon be a Dortmund player again, according to Rummenigge, who says discussions over a fee are ongoing.
"I can confirm that talks with Borussia Dortmund have taken place," he told Sport1.
"There have also been talks with his agent, but the deal is not done just yet. Both clubs will have to reach an agreement over a transfer fee first.
"Gotze has been at Bayern for three years and it did not work out for him. I am not surprised that Gotze wants to leave. He is 24 years old and needs to play regularly."
Gotze said in May he was looking forward to working with incoming Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti, only to be told by the club he could not expect to be a regular starter.
Rummenigge said then: "He knows what the club thinks and what the new coach thinks. Mario has to evaluate for himself whether he wants to play constantly."
Gotze worked with Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund, and Sky sources indicated back in March he would be among Liverpool's summer transfer targets.
