After making his competitive debut for England Jack Butland says that competition for places is good and is now focused on putting pressure on Joe Hart.

Jack Butland has pledged to push Joe Hart right to the wire for the England number one shirt ahead of next summer's European Championships.

The Stoke 'keeper made his first start in goal for England as they beat Lithuania 3-0 and became the only team to qualify for next summer's tournament with a perfect record.

Butland has been in impressive form for the Potters this season but faces a battle to usurp Manchester City's Joe Hart for the number one spot - but it is a battle the 22-year-old is relishing.

"It was an honour and a very proud moment to get the start, a win, and a clean sheet. I thoroughly enjoyed it," Butland told Sky Sports.

Terry Butcher casts his verdict on how England performed in Vilnius

"I've just got to find that consistency at Stoke, play as well as I can and come into the squad confident, and play well.

"I will keep the pressure on and if that drives him and makes him better then it's better for all of us. But ultimately I'd like to play.

"Time will tell, but he's a fantastic goalkeeper and I'm just biding my time, working as hard as I can."

A number of other young players have recently made their senior international debuts, including 19-year-old Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli.

And former U21 captain Butland believes it can only stand England in good squad ahead of next year's competition in France.

A look at the players who could force their way into Euro 2016 contention

Butland said: "We're now getting to the stage where a lot more young English players are playing in the Premier League. You add that to the experienced guys we have and it's tough to get into the squad.

"When those guys are fit there's going to be a real competition for places, but ultimately that's what you want within an international squad. You don't want anyone just thinking they're in it because of who they are, it's a competition.

"If everyone's fit, with the talent we have, it could be a very, very good squad."
