Andy Robertson is optimistic Scotland can beat England if they can perform to the same standard as they did against Slovenia.

Gordon Strachan's team needed a late goal from Chris Martin on Sunday night to retain a realistic chance of qualifying for next year's World Cup in Russia.

In reality, however, the performance they delivered en route to their 1-0 success was a good one and worthy of maximum points.

Next up for the Scots are England at Hampden on June 10, with Hull full-back Robertson hopeful they can shock Gareth Southgate's side.

Robertson said: "We are only two points off second. We've got a massive game coming up next, we have England at home.

"If we show that tempo and desire, then you never know what happens. If we pick up points in that game, we are right back in it."

Robertson took encouragement from the way Scotland defeated the Slovenians to stay in contention at a time when under-pressure Strachan needed a good performance.

Robertson, 23, added: "From what I remember, that's the best we have played in a while.

"Especially [in the] first half, we were creating chances and the tempo we were pressing at, the midfielders were all over the place, the wingers were pressing and the defence was tight.

"I think they only had one shot at goal the whole game and that's what we have been asking for. I thought the defence looked solid and the whole team looked solid as a defensive unit.

"[In the] first half, we were bang at it. We should have probably gone in two or three up if I'm being honest. Griff was gutted he never put them away but that's football and we moved on.

"We kept going in the second half, they came into it a wee bit more. We huffed and puffed a wee bit but it was all about the win and we managed to get it."
