Wayne Rooney voted for Jamie Vardy ahead of Lionel Messi, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi failed to vote for each other.

Ronaldo was named the world's best player at the inaugural Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich on Monday, where 50 per cent of the decision was based on the votes of captains and coaches from national teams around the globe.

The 31-year-old beat Messi of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann to the inaugural award.

Both Ronaldo and Messi stayed loyal as the Real Madrid forward voted for team-mates Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos, while Messi voted for his Barca colleagues Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

On the list published by FIFA, it was revealed that England skipper Rooney picked Ronaldo as his winner, while England boss Gareth Southgate followed suit by picking the Real Madrid star.

England's media representative Ben Rumsby selected Ronaldo, Messi and former Leicester star N'Golo Kante.

Vardy was the only English player to feature in the selections and he was voted the best player in the world by the captain and coach of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Chinese Taipei and the media in Vanuatu.

Bale featured prominently across the voting process. Along with being top of Chris Coleman and Ashley Williams' list, Bale was backed as the world's best by the coaches of the Maldives, Monserrat and Korea Republic and he also got the vote from the captains of Grenada and India, plus the Indonesian media.

Despite being in the final stages of his career, Manchester United's Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the number one choice of the coach and captain of Sweden.

The coach of Chile unsurprisingly voted for his key player Alexis Sanchez and was so adamant about his choice he didn't even bother selecting a second and third choice - the only person not to do so.
