Watford vs Newcastle
3:00pm Saturday 5th May
WATFORD 2-1 NEWCASTLE
FT: That's that! Watford secure their place in the Premier League for next season, and this was a game of both halves.
Newcastle were poor first half, Watford poor second half, but the hosts have got the job done.
90+3: Ball after ball after ball going into the Watford box, and the hosts are hanging on!
90+1: A couple corners for Newcastle, but both dealt with well. Gayle fouls Holebas and Watford can run the clock down.
Four minutes added on.
90: CHANCE! Watford can kill it here! Richarlison has it, Watford are 2 v 1 with Deulofeu to his right, but his pass is ahead of him and Dubravka comes out to clear!
89: CHANCE! What a block by Mariappa! Deulofeu fails to track back again, Yedlin is slipped in down the right, and his cut-back is perfect for Merino.
He moves onto it, but his effort is blocked superbly by Mariappa!
88: Watford fans, in fairness, are really getting behind their team in the final few minutes. They'll want the game to peter out here...
86: Richarlison makes up for it, taking one for the team from Lejeune. A chance for Watford to run the clock down.
84: That's so, so poor from Richarlison. He's two yards offside as Doucoure plays him through on goal, despite having ample time to get back onside.
82: Watford sitting so deep. Ritchie with the ball in from the right, cleared. Yedlin then gets past Deulofeu but not Holebas.
80: Watford fans not happy as Gray is brought off, replaced by Richarlison.
78: End-to-end stuff here, but Watford are going direct and struggling to hold onto the ball for more than two passes. Newcastle still in command of the play, but Watford in command of the scoreline.
76: It seems the entire stadium is waiting for a Newcastle equaliser. It has been relentless in the last 25 minutes.
74: POST! Corner to Newcastle, taken by Shelvey to the near post, and Perez gets across his marker...
He flicks it back towards goal, and it hits the outside of the post and falls into the side-netting! So unlucky.
72: PENALTY APPEAL! Watford hanging on here.
Shelvey dinks the ball to Gayle inside the box brilliantly. He has his back to goal, Cathcart sticks his leg in, falls over and brings Gayle with him, but nothing given! I've seen those awarded, for sure.
70: Capoue has a go from range, it flies high and wide, but it got a deflection.
Holebas takes, but it's cleared with ease and Newcastle can turn their attentions to attacking again.
67: Another Newcastle sup. Yedlin is on, replacing Manquillo.
Hope for Newcastle? What a finish by Perez.
65: SAVE! Nearly an own goal by Mariappa! Manquillo crosses from the right, flat and pacy, and Mariappa almost diverts it into his net but for the decent reflexes of Karnezis!
62: Watford are on the ropes... and it looks like they're reverting to shape. Deeney, the skipper, is being subbed off with an hour gone. Mariappa coming on.
Deeney doesn't look too happy. Unsurprisingly...
60: Kabasele left one-on-one with Perez on the left. He blocks him off, and that's a booking for the Watford man.
Shelvey delivers the free-kick, it's dangerous... deflected to the far post for Lejeune, but his reactions are poor and he heads well wide.
58: Newcastle have their tails up, and their vocal support behind them too. Deulofeu gives the ball away sloppily, but Perez can't take advantage.
Diame then tries an ambitious diagonal. Out of play.
57: Pereyra must be injured. He's replaced by Deulofeu.
GOAL! WATFORD 2-1 NEWCASTLE (Perez, 55)
Well, well, that's changed the complexion of this game! And what a finish it is from Ayoze Perez.
There's space for Newcastle as Pereyra fails to track back... Manquillo looks for Perez far post, he's sliding for it, but he taps it with the outside of his boot beyond Karnezis!
Brilliant goal. Game on!
WATFORD 2-0 NEWCASTLE
55: Holebas with a ball in, cleared to Pereyra on the edge, but he gets under it and volleys well over the bar.
53: Murphy, who hasn't had the best of games, is replaced by Matt Ritchie early in the second half.
51: Space for Diame, he looks to thread the ball for Gayle behind the back line, but yet again Cathcart comes out and clears. Good defending.
49: Holebas with a deep, deep free-kick from the left, but a really good claim from Dubravka. An impressive goalkeeper, I must say.
47: Shelvey is always probing with those long passes. He tries to curl it over the back line, Perez is just inches away from it, however.
46: Back under way in the second half at Vicarage Road.
IN-PLAY PRICE BOOSTS
Troy Deeney to score the game's third goal is priced at 7/1, Andre Gray to bag a brace at 11/4 while Jonjo Shelvey to be carded is up to 11/2...
Watford v Newcastle: In-play Price Boosts, RequestABets and more odds
HT: This game should be over. It could have been three, maybe even four, as we go into the half. Will Deeney rue the penalty miss?
Newcastle are lying on the beach, their mates burying them in the sand while they nod off to sleep, surrounded by sandcastles, beach balls flying about etc. etc. Poor from Rafa's men, but an open contest nonetheless.
44: Holebas with a dangerous free-kick, but Dubravka punches it away, double-fisted! Lascelles then clears well ahead of Deeney from the return cross.
42: Capoue gets away from Shelvey, who brings the midfielder down. Booking, potentially for dissent rather than the tackle by Shelvey.
40: PENALTY MISSED!
Deeney steps up, he's missed one already this season... and Dubravka saves low to his right!
It rebounds into the path of Deeney, SURELY! NO! Dubravka blocks it again!
38: PENALTY TO WATFORD!
Bizarre. This doesn't look right, but technically it's a stonewall penalty.
Dummett and Gray are pacing towards the byline, Dummett slides in with Gray, doesn't touch the ball, and it goes out for what looks like a goal kick, but Roger East points to the spot!
Not too many complaints, it's a sloppy challenge.
35: Cathcart is pursued by Gayle, gets himself in a little bit of a tangle, and goes safety first as he clears for a throw in as Gayle was about to steal in through on goal.
33: The ball is pulled back to Shelvey around 15 yards out for Newcastle, but his fierce effort is blocked by Kabasele in the box.
31: Where has this Watford been since the turn of the year? Newcastle yet to test Karnezis, and the Hornets have looked superb both in defence and going forward. Capoue and Deeney pulling the strings.
GOAL! WATFORD 2-0 NEWCASTLE (Gray, 28)
And there is the second!
Deeney and Pereyra play a nice one-two on the left, and a lovely bit of skill from the Argentine allows him a yard to cross for Gray at the back stick.
Dubravka stretches for it, but almost misjudges it, and it allows Gray to head into the empty net at the far post!
WATFORD 1-0 NEWCASTLE
27: SAVE! Gray and Deeney look dangerous as a pair, and Watford again should be two up.
Deeney slips Gray in on the right of the box, at a slight angle but a lot of the goal to aim at.
He goes with his laces, and Dubravka beats it away! He should have perhaps gone low to the goalkeeper's left in the corner.
25: Newcastle break, Gayle spreads to Kenedy after a lovely ball from Shelvey. They're three on two, but Gayle's pass is overhit and it nips the attack in the bud.
22: Really open game, this. Perez comes away with the ball and looks to slip in Gayle, but he plays it down the wrong side of Cathcart, and he steps out to intercept.
20: Just as I say that, Newcastle leave holes all over the shop in the defensive third. Deeney has space but is slow onto it, and then Capoue is allowed to pile into the box. Luckily, Lejeune dispossesses.
17: Newcastle have settled down a bit now, have seen the shape of Watford and after the early storm, are seeing some pattern to their play.
14: Shelvey with a trademark, curling ball looking for Gayle behind the back line, but Karnezis rushes out to collect.
Then, Manquillo crosses from the right, there's danger in the box as it pinballs around, but Kenedy's left-footed shot hits his own man Perez and goes out for a goal kick.
12: Gray is enjoying linking up with Deeney up front. The latter finds the former, but he'd just strayed offside as he curved his run.
10: Diame with a surging run forward, looking for Perez, but Cathcart sees it well and dispossesses.
7: CHANCE! Watford should be 2-0 up! First Pereyra is slotted through on goal by Deeney, but Dubravka does well to block it.
Deeney follows up... surely! But his effort finds Dubravka too! Then it falls to Capoue, and he curls it wide of goal with the Newcastle keeper struggling to get back!
5: Newcastle really struggling early on to even find a team-mate. The battle of the Spanish managers being won by Javi Gracia so far, on Rafa's 500th game in English football.
GOAL! WATFORD 1-0 NEWCASTLE (Pereyra, 3)
What a mess for Newcastle, but a great start for Watford!
It opens up for Gray on the edge of the box, he feeds Deeney but Dummett comes in to dispossess. Horrible clearance, straight to Doucoure, who squares for Pereyra, and he makes no mistake! He slots it into the bottom right corner past Dubravka
