Andre Schurrle's goal gave Wolfsburg a 1-0 win over Gent in their Champions League last-16, second-leg clash to send the German side through 4-2 on aggregate.

The former Chelsea midfielder swept home with 16 minutes remaining to put the game out of reach of Gent after fine work by Julian Draxler on the right wing.

The result means Wolfsburg have reached the last eight of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Draxler passed a late fitness test for the hosts, whose passage to the quarter-finals had been thrown into doubt in the first leg after they conceded two late goals having led 3-0 after an hour.

In a game lacking in clear-cut chances, Wolfsburg went closest in the first half through Josuha Guilavogui, whose long-range effort was well saved by Matz Sels.

In the second-half, Luis Gustavo's left-footed effort stung the hands of Sels from close range, before Schurrle failed to convert from eight yards on the volley following Max Kruse's cut-back.

But Wolfsburg put the tie out of reach in the 74th minute through the German, who got on the end of compatriot Draxler's centre to convert from eight yards after fine work on the right of midfield.
