WATCH: MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
N.FOREST 0-1 ASTON VILLA
FT: Scott Hogan's first-half goal was the difference here as Villa were comfortable for the majority. They defended brilliantly, led by the returning John Terry and had the quality in the final third, especially through Robert Snodgrass. Not the home debut Aitor Karanka would have wanted. Stay tuned for highlights and reaction.
90+3: Dowell fouls Grealish deep inside his own half. Villa seeing this one out. One minute left....
90+2: SUB! Bruce winding down the clock. Adomah off. Taylor on.
90: SHOT! Well worked. Forest get it down the right and Ward has space to work with. He has support in the middle but plants a hopeful cross-shot into the arms of Johnstone.
Four minutes added on.
88: GOAL...NO, OFFSIDE! Davis holds the ball up well and threads through Adomah. He finishes easily into the bottom corner but he was two yards offside. Villa still can't find that cushion.
86: SAVE! Dowell hasn't had many opportunities to get into space but finds some here. He smacks an effort at goal from 30 yards which swerves in the air and Johnstone has to watch it carefully to swat it away.
84: SHOT! Villa just can't find this second goal. Grealish moves forward into space and tries his luck from 20 yards. He's better than that. Miles over.
82: SUBS! One last throw of the dice from Karanka. Ward and Bridcutt on. Cash and Vaughan replaced.
80: SAVE! Brereton manages to burst in behind Terry and Chester down the left. He flicks the ball inside for McKay whose first touch is excellent. It takes him into the box but his shot is easily saved at the near post by Johnstone.
78: Nice break by Snodgrass down the right as Villa ease the building of pressure. He slaloms his way into the box but Mills sticks a boot in to clear.
75: Traore finds space down the left and tries to whip a cross in. Elmohamaday blocks it with his arm. Free-kick about six yards outside the area.
CHANCE! Dowell delivers....Cash goes up but Bjarnason does enough to put him off and he heads over.
73: A direct ball forward causes Chester to slip and he does well to block the ball from running through to Brereton. Forest starting to build a bit of momentum here - still no chances created, mind.
70: YELLOW! Elmohamaday takes an age over a throw in and the referee spots the time wasting. He goes into the book. Game management, Steve Bruce would call it.
67: CHANCE!! Chester plays a sloppy pass out from the back straight to McKay. He runs straight at Terry, who backs off. He gets to the edge of the box but his finish is an obvious one down low and Johnstone makes the save.
64: SUB! First change from Karanka. Clough is replaced by McKay.
63: Vaughan squanders possession and Grealish nips in. He drives to the edge of the box and shifts it out to Adomah, who fizzes a low ball into the box but Mancienne has to make an important clearance under his own crossbar.
60: Better from Forest. They break with Cash down the right, who tricks his way past Adomah. He manages to flash one across goal but Chester makes a fine clearance.
57: Snodgrass is fouled down the right. Villa bring Chester and Terry up from the back. Snodgrass looks for Terry at the back post but Mills flicks it clear and offside is given anyway.
54: Villa doing all the pressing. They win another free-kick down the right flank. Snodgrass lines it up and sends a wicked ball into the danger area but Smith this time is quick off his line to mop up.
50: CLOSE! Villa have flown out of the blocks here. Grealish drives forward and has no problem taking the shot on from 22 yards. He catches it sweetly but it whistles past the far post.
48: SAVE!! Brilliant from Snodgrass - who has lit up this game. Villa win a free-kick right on the edge of the box down the left. He could fire one into the middle but whips one towards the near post and Smith has to scamper across to claw it away.
45: We are back. One change for Villa - Whelan has been replaced by Bjarnason. Must be an injury for Whelan, who was excellent in the first-half. Game on...
HT: Villa have looked like a well-oiled machine here. Hogan
got their early goal and they’ve defended magnificently ever since. In fact,
Terry should have doubled their lead but headed against the bar from six yards
out. Work to do for Karanka. See you in 15.
45+1: Cash dribbles at the heart of the Villa backline. Whelan trips him. Free-kick about 22 yards out.
CLOSE! Dowell whips a left-foot at it but it's always curling wide of the upright. Johnstone had it covered.
45: One minute added on.
43: Adomah keeps his width and runs at Lichaj. He gets to the by-line but his chipped cross goes straight out of play.
41: BLOCK! Terry gets caught out of position and Brereton feeds Clough in space. He sets up Cash for the 20-yard drive but Whelan gets across to make a fantastically brave charge down.
39: Villa are very well organised - Forest are enjoying plenty of the ball but when they get near the final third a black shirt shuts them down.
36: Villa get up the pitch. Grealish links with Snodgrass, who feeds Elmohamady down the right flank. He beats Clough but his low cross is hooked clear by Mills.
33: A long ball sees Lichaj beat Hutton in the air. It drops to Brereton on the edge of the box but Terry stands firm to make a strong tackle. No way through for Forest.
Johnstone hasn't had to make a save yet.
30: Villa have defended their box expertly thus far. Traore gets down the left and digs a cross out...Terry is there to head clear. Meat and drink to the former England captain.
WATCH: HOGAN GOAL
27: Forest win a corner after some nice work by Clough. The delivery is on point and Johnstone gets caught in no-mans land. Luckily for him, Hutton is aware and heads clear.
24: CROSSBAR! Good play from Grealish, who draws a foul of Osborn down the left. Snodgrass whips a sensational ball into the middle and Terry rises highest from six yards...he connects....but the ball smashes back off the woodwork! You'd expect him to score there.
21: No real response from Forest. Worth noting that Villa haven't lost a game they've scored first in since last February. Tough nut to crack when in front.
GOAL! N.FOREST 0-1 ASTON VILLA (Hogan, 18)
The visitors silence the buoyant home crowd! Karanka won't be happy with the defending.
Snodgrass cuts in off the right and send a tasty ball that causes panic between Smith and Mills. They leave it for one another and Hogan nips in, finishing first-time with a clever prod.
N.FOREST 0-0 ASTON VILLA
17: Adomah was down for a minute or so but after a dab of the magic sponge, he's up.
16: OUCH! How have Villa not got a free-kick there? Adomah dances his way to about 22 yards out and is met by a thumping tackle from Mills, who leaves studs on the Villa winger's ankle. No foul, apparently - not only was it a foul, it could have been a booking. Bruce disgusted on the bench.
14: SHOT! Crisp, sharp attacking from Forest. Dowell finds Cash with a fine pass and he makes space on the edge of the box. He drills one with his left-foot but it's straight at Johnstone.
12: SHOT! Grealish instigates a move and moves it out to Hourihane inside the area down the right. He cuts inside and looks to bend one....Traore makes the block.
9: Snodgrass drives forward but Vaughan stops him with a sliding tackle. Corner.
Grealish whips a ball in but Mancienne swipes it clear inside his own six-yard box.
6: Good spell of possession for Forest in midfield with Vaughan bossing the ball. Dowell gets released down the right, he cuts inside but his cross is cleared by Terry.
3: Both teams keen to get the ball forward quickly and bypass midfield. Brereton - high on confidence - has an early run down the line up against Chester, who makes a strong tackle.
1: KICK-OFF! Let's go! Forest in traditional red and Villa in black. Game on....
