Newcastle have agreed a deal with German side Mainz to sign Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto.

The 25-year-old Japan international is travelling to Newcastle from Tokyo. Sky sources understand the deal is worth £9.5m.

Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroder said: "We have had good and constructive discussions with Newcastle United and we have come to an agreement in principle.

"There are still some key details to clarify, but we are confident that we will soon reach a final transfer decision."

Muto played for Japan at this summer's World Cup, with his sole appearance in Russia coming during the 1-0 defeat to Poland in Group H.

He has scored 20 Bundesliga goals in 66 appearances since joining Mainz from FC Tokyo in 2015.

Meanwhile, Fabian Schar completed his move to Newcastle on Thursday, signing a three-year deal at St James' Park.
