Jamie Carragher reacts to England's shock exit from Euro 2016 after a 2-1 defeat to Iceland in Nice

Jamie Carragher labelled England's Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland as "shambolic" and believes it is the worst performance he has ever seen from the national side.

England crashed out of the tournament in France after losing 2-1 to Iceland on Monday.

Wayne Rooney had put Roy Hodgson's side in front from the penalty spot on three minutes, only for Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbein Sigthorsson to turn the match on its head to hand Iceland the greatest result of their history.

Carragher, who won 38 caps for England over an 11-year period, questioned the talent and temperament of Hodgson's squad.

"Have I ever seen England play worse? No, I don't think so," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "That was a shambolic performance - especially in the second half.

"The mistakes for the first two goals came in the first half but as a group of players to not have any idea on the pitch, to panic; we didn't really have too many chances, people were doing stupid things with the ball, shooting from stupid areas, the set-pieces... I don't think I can remember anything as bad as that really for England."

Carragher expects England players to come under scrutiny for their failure to replicate their club form at international level, having managed just one victory throughout the tournament in France.

"I've been part of England squads that have had the same said about us - not playing as well as we do for our club," he added.

"It's a good England squad - it's got plenty of good Premier League players - but we don't have really top-class players who've done it at Champions League level, who have done it at real England level.

"Of course we've got Wayne Rooney but he's coming to the end of his career, he's over 30 now. They're Premier League players but they're not more than that.

"They're just an average bunch of players really and obviously the manager carries the can. I can't see how he could continue. But the players are nowhere near good enough."

Roy Hodgson resigned from his position as England manager immediately after the defeat and Carragher believes the 68-year-old had no other choice.

"It think it was the obvious decision," he said. "You'd only have to wait until the morning for him to get sacked. I think he's taken the right decision and they have a few months to fix it before the next qualifying campaign [World Cup].

"The main thing was to try to win the group but we thought we were fortunate by getting Iceland and not Portugal. On paper, we played the weakest opposition. It can't get any worse than that."
