Cup joy for Caen

Caen stunned Monaco on Wednesday to reach the final of the Coupe de la League.

Caen stunned Monaco on Wednesday to reach the final of the Coupe de la League.

Caen are struggling near the foot of Ligue 1, but this has not stopped their progress in the knockout competition and they added Monaco to the scalp of Auxerre in the quarter final.

Monaco boss Didier Deschamps opted to rest a number of his key figures and paid the price as Caen hit the Principality side with a first-half blitz.

Goals from Sebastien Mazure and Reynald Lemaitre had Caen in control at the interval and their position was improved on 53 minutes when Cyrille Watier converted from the spot.

Monaco finished the game with ten men as keeper Fabien Audard was dismissed and the late penalty from Emmanuel Adebayor proved nothing more than a consolation for Deschamps' troops.

Caen will meet Strasbourg in the final on April 30 after they got the better of St Etienne on Tuesday thanks to a goal from Alexander Farnerud.
