Bemused Mexes happy to stay

EXCLUSIVE
PHILIPPE MEXES is happy to stay at Auxerre, with agent Olivier Jouanneaux revealing to planetfootball that quotes attributed to the player at the weekend were years old.

Mexes has had a major impact for Auxerre this season, winning rave reviews with his performances at the heart of the defence.

However the player was mystified to find things he said three years ago splashed across an English paper at the weekend, and his agent insists he is not looking to leave French club Auxerre.

"Philippe is very happy at Auxerre," said Jouanneaux.

"He loves this place, he loves the club and it is the best place for him to grow up and develop as a player.

"He does not want to leave. He has a contract until 2005 and at the present time he has every intention that he will stay until the end of the deal.

"The words of Philippe were accurate but they were three years old.

"I believe that they were dredged up because Arsenal will play Auxerre in the Champions League.

"Philippe is not the kind of guy who has to say he will play here or there, he believes he has the quality to attract the big clubs.

"The interest from Manchester and Arsenal dates back years. It is no longer news and Philippe has learned to live with constant speculation.

"It is like when you are married, other women will look at you but you have made a commitment to your wife and she has made a commitment to you.

"He is not upset that these comments have resurfaced, he is a very assured character.

"He is only 20 but he is very mature for his age.

"He is very charismatic and, like his great friend Laurent Blanc, he does not need to speak to get people to respect him.

"When they write that he gets Christmas cards from [Sir Alex] Ferguson, it is old. I know he did not get one this year or last year. It is old information.

"Once Manchester was very close to Philippe because at the time he was looking to leave Auxerre because he was not getting first team football.

"Philippe knows where he comes from and he knows he must be doing his talking on the pitch and not in the News of the World."
