Howard thriving on pressure

Manchester United keeper Tim Howard has admitted the players are under real pressure but is confident the team can handle the heat.

United have shipped goals at a regular rate since the suspension of Rio Ferdinand and Wednesday's home defeat to Middlesbrough set the alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford.

American keeper Howard has been a commanding figure for United since his arrival in the summer but he has admitted the pressure is starting to mount for The Red Devils.

"I think the whole club is under pressure," he said. "All the players, including myself, are under a bit more scrutiny now.

"The title race is getting close to the end and every game is taking on added pressure.

"This is a time for pressure. Some people will melt under it, some people will relish it. I jut hope we can welcome the pressure and take it on."

Howard feels he can handle the weight of expectation at Old Trafford.

"Every time I go out I feel pressure," he added. "But that is just in my make-up.

"It is not detrimental to my performance.

"I try to be consistent, not to try to be the hero. I have had some good matches and some disappointing ones.

"All in all, I am just trying to be consistent."
