Keane hails defensive duo

Roy Keane believes Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre can become United legends.

Roy Keane believes Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre can form a defensive partnership to rival that of Manchester United legends Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister.

Bruce and Pallister played a pivotal part in moulding Sir Alex Ferguson's side into the commanding force they were in the 1990s.

With Bruce and Pallister dominant at the back, Ferguson's side carried all before them and Keane feels the Scottish tactician has a pairing capable of matching their feats.

"Steve and Gary were outstanding as a defensive unit but Rio and Mikael have what it takes to be just as good," Keane told MUTV.

"Rio is a naturally fit lad and has a physical presence about him and he gives the other defenders an opportunity to play."

Keane has admitted that the club was affected by the suspension of Rio Ferdinand.

The England international made his return from eight months on the sidelines on Monday and Irish powerhouse Keane is looking for the club to draw a line under the whole affair.

"It is the end of a chapter that brought a lot of negativity to the club," said Keane. "It was draining and affected people at the club.

"The fact he is back means it is over with now and we can start talking about football again."
