Howard optimistic over place

Tim Howard is optimistic he can regain his first-team place at United.

Manchester United keeper Tim Howard is optimistic he can regain his first-team place ahead of Roy Carroll.

The American was axed following a below-par start to the season, with Sir Alex Ferguson opting for the Northern Ireland international.

Howard is keeping in high spirits and is confident he will gain a chance to get back the number one jersey.

"You can't let yourself get too up or too down," explained Howard. "I look forward to getting my place back, whenever that may be and I'm optimistic.

"It's just a natural curve in football. Roy Carroll has been playing well, so I just have to keep fighting to win back a place in the team.

"Our job is to push ourselves to the limit and then let the manager make the decision. Roy and I get along great. That's the way it has to be."
