Howard ready for challenge

Tim Howard is determined to grasp his chance to revive his Manchester United career.

The United States international has largely been a peripheral figure this term after being axed as Sir Alex Ferguson's number one in September.

Roy Carroll had been Ferguson's first choice for the bulk of the campaign, but his mistake against Milan last week has now seen him dropped.

Howard was restored to the side for Saturday's 2-1 victory over Portsmouth after being handed a lifeline by Ferguson.

The United boss has challenged the American to prove he is worthy of being in goal for the UEFA Champions League second leg in Milan.

It is a challenge Howard is eager to rise to, after admitting he has never thought about quitting Old Trafford during his spell on the bench.

"The coward's way would be to leave," said Howard. "I am going to fight.

"I enjoy the challenge of improving and doing well and I plan on staying here.

"Of course I am frustrated when I am not playing.

"If you are enjoying not playing then there's something wrong."
