Smith ready to fight

Alan Smith's agent has told skysports.com that his client is going nowhere.

The agent of Manchester United striker Alan Smith has told skysports.com that his client has no intention of quitting Old Trafford amidst reported interest from Rangers.

Earlier in the summer Smith was the subject of an enquiry from Newcastle but Graeme Souness' approach for the powerful striker was rejected.

Scottish giants Rangers have emerged as the latest suitors for the England hit-man, who has at times had scarce opportunity to impress in Manchester.

A possible season-long loan spell has been mooted but this now appears an unlikely scenario.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always expressed his admiration for the player and has even intimated that his long-term future could be in midfield.

Smith has also reiterated a desire to remain at United and now his agent, Alex Black, has confirmed the player will not be leaving.

Whilst acknowledging Rangers are a big club, Smith has every intention of fighting for a regular starting spot next season.

''It's flattering to be linked with a big club,'' Black conceded to skysports.com.

''But Alan is going to be staying at Manchester United and will fight for a first team place next season.''
