Mavuba fancies United move

Rio Mavuba tells skysports.com he would relish the chance to play for Man Utd.

Rio Mavuba has played down rumours of contact with Manchester United, but tells skysports.com he would relish the opportunity to play for the Premiership leaders.

Reports have claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering Mavuba as an alternative to Owen Hargreaves, if he fails to persuade Bayern Munich to sell the midfielder in January.

Mavuba has regularly expressed his frustration with his situation at Bordeaux, where he is not guaranteed a starting spot.

He would welcome the chance to sign for United, but concedes talk of contact with the club is currently wide of the mark.

"The press talks about it, the websites also, but I am not in direct contact with Manchester United," Mavuba told skysports.com.

"People have said my agent has met with Sir Alex Ferguson's brother, but that is false.

"I don't know what my future will be, but I have never hidden my ambition to play for such a big club."

The France international also acknowledged that being in and out of Ricardo's team could hasten his departure from Bordeaux.

He added: "I am surprised when I play a great match and I sit on the bench the week after.

"I am always surprised to be a substitute when I don't deserve it. Of course, that could make me leave Bordeaux.

"I don't know what the problem is, but if I want to reach a new step, I will have to play for a bigger club that trusts me."
