Eidur seals Barca switch

Barcelona have completed the signing of Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Barcelona have completed the signing of Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen for a reported £8.2 million.

The 27-year-old passed a medical on Wednesday and within a few hours had wrapped up the formalities of his switch to the Camp Nou.

After Barca had earlier agreed a fee with The Blues for the former Bolton player, Gudjohnsen put to pen-to-paper on a reported four-year contract to end Frank Rijkaard's long pursuit of the player.

The Icelandic international found himself increasingly on the margins of the Chelsea first team last season but was still widely regarded as one of the most complete strikers in The Premiership.

Gudjohnsen, who scored 54 goals in 186 league games for The Blues, has the chance to make a similar name for himself in La Liga and it is a challenge he is relishing.

"I would like to express my happiness at joining one of the most prestigious clubs in the world," said Gudjohnsen.

"They are the winners of the Champions League and Spanish league. I was at a big club before and it is always a big challenge to join a new team.

"I now have to win the confidence of the coach and make it difficult for him to leave me out.

"It is a great honour for me and I hope to make the supporters happy.

"There were other big clubs interested in me but when Barca show their interest, it is not possible to say no.

"I was at a big team before at Chelsea and everyone needed to be motivated to succeed and I have the same aim here."

Gudjohnsen admitted the time was right to move on from The Premiership champions after holding talks with Jose Mourinho.

"We had a discussion and we decided it was time to move on after six years," added Gudjohnsen.

"At the time, I did not talk about Barca but when we played against them, he did tell us about the passion the people had and he tried to make us understand what it means for the Catalonian people - it is the people's club."
