Bridge out of Spain game

Wayne Bridge will miss England's friendly with Spain due to a thigh injury.

Wayne Bridge will miss England's friendly with Spain after pulling out of the squad with a thigh injury.

The left-back played 90 minutes in Chelsea's 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic at the weekend, but picked up a minor complaint.

He has now opted to withdraw from Wednesday's tussle with Spain at Old Trafford and joins club team-mate Ashley Cole in sitting out the friendly.

Cole suffered a knee injury last week and Bridge would have been the favourite to start against Luis Aragones' side.

But England coach Steve McClaren must now assess his options, with the obvious candidate to start at left-back being Gareth Barry.

The Aston Villa captain has been called up by McClaren for the first time, although the likes of Jamie Carragher, Phil Neville and Micah Richards are other options for the England boss to consider.

Earlier on Monday, Andy Johnson withdrew due to an ankle injury, while Jermaine Jenas and Owen Hargreaves are also out of the game.
