Murphy eyes England place

Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has set his sights on making a late charge to gatecrash Sven Goran Eriksson's plans for Euro 2004.

Murphy has endured a frustrating season so far finding himself in and out of the team, but he hopes it will come good in the summer for him to make the trip to Portugal.

The former Crewe ace has recently won his place back in the side after a long spell in the shadows and he is keen to keep hold of it as he seeks to secure a place in the squad for Euro 2004.

"As for me, it has been difficult at times, certainly not being in the side for a long time at the beginning of the season and then for a spell recently," said Murphy.

"It was hard to take, mainly because it came on the back of what had been my best season.

"It was not something I had expected. But maybe I had started to take for granted that I was in the side.

"Now I am back in I intend staying in. And maybe that will help me sneak into the England squad for Euro 2004.

"I certainly want success for Liverpool before that, but it has taken me time to get my physical sharpness back.

"I am not naturally a fit player, not say like someone like Jamie Carragher who is built in such a way that he can have six months off and just walk back into the team.

"Now I know I need a run of form to get into the England squad, and mainly for Liverpool's sake."
