Villa move in for Vignal

Aston Villa have joined the hunt for French full back Gregory Vignal.

Aston Villa have joined the hunt for French full back Gregory Vignal, who is on loan at Rangers from Liverpool.

Vignal has enjoyed an impressive season in Scotland and The Gers are keen to sign the left back on a permanent basis.

But talks between the two parties have broken down and Vignal is currently assessing his options for when his Liverpool contract expires in the summer.

Newcastle United and Marseille are interested in the 23-year-old, while Villa have now entered the race for his signature.

The player's agent Philippe Flavier is aware of interest from The Premiership and hinted that Marseille have little hope of capturing Vignal.

"He will probably not return to France," said Flavier. "Gregory wants to stay in Scotland or England.

"We have heard that Newcastle and Aston Villa are interested and other clubs too, but I have not met with any English club."

Despite talks reaching an impasse with Rangers, Flavier did not discount the possibility of an accord being struck with the Scottish giants.

He added: "Nothing has changed but everything is still open for Glasgow too.

"Okay, we did not find an agreement but the two parties like working together."
