WENGER KEEN TO KEEP BERGKAMP

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger insists that Dennis Bergkamp will be staying at Highbury, despite interest from Premiership new boys Fulham.

Wenger denied that he was trying to offload the Dutchman and that he was an important component in his plans for the new season.

Reports had suggested that Wenger could be willing to sell Bergkamp with the arrival of Francis Jeffers in the summer increasing competiton for places between Thierry Henry, Sylvain Wiltord and Nwankwo Kanu.

Fulham are keen to bring in a new striker to bolster their attacking options and they have been linked with Bergkamp, Highbury team-mate Kanu and Lyon ace Steve Marlet.

Bergkamp, who recently signed a two-year extension to his contract, proved his worth to The Gunners when he came on as a late substitute in the weekend win over Middlesbrough and scored twice which will boost his claims for a place in the starting line-up.

Wenger admitted that Fulham had enquired about Bergkamp, but that he did not want to sell him and the player himself was not interested in a move.

"He signed a two-year extension to his contract a few months ago and I didn't let him do that to sell him now," said Wenger.

"Fulham showed some interest and probably wanted to sign him but I told Dennis this and he didn't want to go, as much as I didn't want to let him go.

The Frenchman did hint though that he could be forced to sell one of his five strikers, but that he needed plenty of strength in depth.

"We have five strikers here now and maybe we will lose one or two over the next few months - but if you want to be a winner, you have to have competition.
