Cole's 'number one' says Clichy

Arsenal's Gael Clichy is revelling in his role of understudy to Ashley Cole.

Arsenal's Gael Clichy is revelling in his role of understudy to first choice left back Ashley Cole even if he harbours more ambitious aspirations.

Clichy has enjoyed deputising in the absence of the injured Cole but admits he still has much to learn though he believes he has found an able teacher in the England left back.

"Ashley Cole gives me advice," Clichy told But!

The French Under-21 international is keen to see Cole return from his lay-off even though he has aspirations of one day usurping the 24-year-old.

"I am eager to see him back from his injury, even if we play at the same position - he is an important player," added Clichy.

"But it is also an opportunity to show we can be good without him too.

"Ashley remains number one, and I am still in a learning period - I have proved I can play a little role.

"I have a lot of work to rejoin him, but my ambition is to take his place one day.‚Ç¥
