Richard on the Wright road

Richard Wright is confident of returning to full fitness in the New Year but knows he faces a tough task to dislodge Nigel Martyn from between the sticks at Everton.

The former Ipswich Town keeper has had a torrid 12 months with injuries, but feels he is on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery in America a fortnight ago.

Wright has been given the all-clear to return to training but knows he faces a long road ahead.

"It has been a frustrating 12 months," Wright told Sky Sports News. "I had the knee injury last January then had a silly shoulder injury. I played a few games in pre-season but then got injured.

"But I am looking forward to the New Year and hope it will be a good one for me.

"I am positive and Dr Steadman was positive also and fingers crossed everything is okay and I hope to be able to play injury free again."

Wright is not prepared to set any lofty aims, but hopes England coach Sven Goran Eriksson will keep a watchful eye on his progress.

He said: "Initially (my aim) is to get back in the Everton team because Nigel is playing well but I need to get back in and if I can do that and play to a high standard, hopefully Mr Eriksson can get me involved again."
