Everton midfielder James McFadden has been ruled out for a month after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty.McFadden limped out of Scotland's Euro 2008 qualifier against Lithuania earlier this month and missed the Merseyside derby at the weekend.
The 23-year-old had been set to play some part against Liverpool after beginning the season on the bench.
However, the Scotland international will now be forced to sit out the next four weeks as he allows the injury to heal.
Toffees head physio Mick Rathbone confirmed the blow but says his rehabilitation is going well.
"James McFadden injured his hamstring, as we all saw watching the game unfolding on television last week, and that is your worst nightmare when the player is thousands of miles away," Rathbone told EvertonTV.
"The injury happened eight days ago and he is doing okay, doing some light jogging but there is a small tear there so he is going to be out for up to a month."
Meanwhile, defender Alan Stubbs is also set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury prior to the Liverpool game.
Stubbs picked up the knock in a training ground collision with Mikel Arteta and is expected to be out for a fortnight.
McFadden and Stubbs aside, Rathbone has not been kept too busy.
He added: "We are pretty light on the injury side, which is good news."
