James McFadden is worried he will miss the rest of the season, if he requires an operation on his broken foot.
The Everton forward broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his foot during a game of head tennis at the club's training ground on Wednesday.
He is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks, but will learn whether he needs surgery on Thursday.
McFadden is already resigned to missing Scotland's Euro 2008 qualifier with Italy at the end of the March.
And the former Motherwell attacker fears that he may not play again this season, if he goes under the knife.
"It's highly unlikely I'll be available for the Italy match," McFadden told The Sun.
"I've been told I'm out for a minimum of six weeks, but to expect anything up to 12.
"If I do (need an operation), that could be me (out) for the rest of the season.
"With a new manager coming in for Scotland you want to play a part, but sadly that won't happen to me."
Prior to his injury, McFadden had started just six Premiership games for Everton this season, with his only goal coming in a 2-0 win at Reading before Christmas.
