Bolton keen to keep duo

Bolton are expected to open contract talks with Vincent Candela and Fernando Hierro.

Bolton are expected to open contract talks with experienced duo Vincent Candela and Fernando Hierro in a bid to extend their stays beyond the summer.

The two stylish stoppers see their current deals expire at the end of the season, although boss Sam Allardyce is keen to retain their services to bolster his squad for expected European football next term.

Both are full internationals and typify Allardyce's success in bringing in vastly talented players from all over the continent, and the Bolton boss admits that his priority is to settle the futures of his current crop of players.

"The most important thing is to make the decision on the present squad players," said Allardyce.

Hierro has played a key role in recent months after originally struggling to make the starting line-up at The Reebok Stadium, and has previously admitted to being undecided over his future.

The 37-year-old former Real Madrid captain would bring invaluable experience should Wanderers claim a surprise UEFA Champions League place, and Allardyce will be hoping he can convince Hierro to prolong his stay in England.

Candela also has European pedigree after a spell with Italian outfit Roma, and could extend the five month deal that he signed upon arriving in January.
