Pompey's Viafara worry

Portsmouth are anxious for John Viafara to quickly pick up the English language.

Portsmouth are anxious for summer signing John Viafara to quickly pick up the English language.

Colombia international Viafara joined Pompey in a £1.6 million deal from Once Caldas earlier in the summer and has impressed his new team-mates with his ability.

But his lack of command of English is hindering his chances of making an immediate impact at Fratton Park.

Though Viafara has played a prominent role during the club's pre-season programme, communication has been a problem.

Pompey coach Joe Jordan admits it currently is an issue and he is hoping that the midfielder will swiftly overcome the language barrier.

"The language is always a big factor for a foreign player and John is struggling on that score," said Jordan.

"He only has a few words of English and it is so important that we have already got a teacher and interpreter fixed up for him.

"At the moment it is a hiccup, not a problem, but it is not helping him or his team-mates.

"He looks a very good player but he has got to be able to communicate on the field and all he has at the moment is his Spanish."
