It is suggested that goalkeeper Brad Jones could be a makeweight in the deal, although the Teesside club are yet to confirm the Australian's availability.
While Gera remains high on manager Gareth Southgate's list of targets - Portsmouth loanee Manuel Fernandes is another under consideration.

Charlton are also said to be looking at Fernandes, but Boro are further on in talks and would appear favourites should a deal transpire.
Sources in Scotland, which linked Boro with Hibernian duo Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson, claim Shaun Maloney of Celtic could be a possible target.
Meanwhile, Southgate confirmed that both Jonathan Woodgate and Mark Schwarzer would be fit for this weekend's Premiership meeting with Charlton - after they missed the FA Cup clash with Hull.
"Woodgate picked up a knock early on against Sheffield United and we brought him off," he said.
"He might have been able to run it off, but I'm not prepared to take risks with players' fitness. That's why we didn't rush him back at Hull.
"The same applies to Schwarzer. He was feeling his back during the week and the sensible thing was to leave him out at Hull. But both players are fine now."
