Defoe backs Davids swoop

Jermain Defoe has welcomed the imminent arrival of Edgar Davids at Tottenham.

Jermain Defoe has welcomed the imminent arrival of Edgar Davids at Tottenham Hotspur.

Dutch international Davids will be in London on Thursday to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Spurs.

The Premiership side have agreed a deal with Davids' club Internazionale to sign the midfielder on a free transfer.

Spurs striker Defoe is delighted the club have set up a move for Davids and is relishing the player's signing.

"It's good news," said Defoe. "The boys have been speaking about it.

"When I heard the news on skysports.com, I was delighted. I got a text from club captain Ledley King and I am looking forward to it.

"I'm sure all the players are looking forward to it. He's a massive name in football and can help us a lot."

Davids is the type of experienced midfielder that Spurs boss Martin Jol has been anxious to sign and Defoe feels his acquisition is exactly what the team need.

He added: "We have got a young squad and a young team, so it's important to have experience in the team.

"He has certainly got that. He has played for all the top clubs in the world, has a load of Holland caps and I hope he can bring that experience to us."

Defoe plundered 22 goals for Tottenham last season and he is hoping the arrival of Davids will help him to boost that number.

The England international continued: "Someone like that, playing in the same team as you, can provide you with balls.

"Playing with Edgar Davids, just thinking about it, is exciting.

"I hope he signs a contract, passes a medical and I look forward to speaking to him and training with him."
