Ten Cate eyes Davids return

New Ajax coach Henk ten Cate insists Edgar Davids wants to return to the club.

New Ajax coach Henk ten Cate insists Edgar Davids wants to return to the club.

Former Barcelona number two ten Cate has revealed that he has held talks with the Tottenham midfielder, and Davids has indicated his willingness to move back to the Dutch capital.

Davids spent five years with Ajax from 1991 to 1996 at the beginning of his career and ten Cate now wants to bring him back to Amsterdam.

"I have spoken with him and he would like that very much", ten Cate told television show Voetbal Iniste.

"Of course there's a price tag attached to it."

Davids has one-year left on his current deal at White Hart Lane, but it has been widely reported that he is keen to end his ties with the North London club.

Ten Cate is hopeful Davids could be lured to Ajax as part of his new-look squad.

"Together with Jaap Stam [who joins this summer] he [Davids] is a lad who doesn't need a captain's armband to have authority," ten Cate continued.

"They can make the young boys clear what is required to reach the top and even more important, what it takes to stay at the top."

Meanwhile, Ajax have also confirmed the signing of Romanian international George Ogararu.

The 26-year-old full back arrives from Steaua Bucharest after Ajax agreed a fee believed to be worth ‚é¼3 million.
