Latics look to bring in Boyce

Wigan have reportedly agreed a deal with Crystal Palace for defender Emmerson Boyce.

Wigan Athletic have reportedly agreed a deal with Crystal Palace for defender Emmerson Boyce, paving the way for Pascal Chimbonda to leave the club.

Both The Latics and Charlton Athletic have been pursuing the 26-year-old right back, but manager Paul Jewell has seemingly come out on top.

Last season's right back Chimbonda handed in a transfer request in May, but has yet to find a club despite persistent links with Tottenham Hotspur.

While Jewell has brought in Boyce as cover, he insists his Frenchman will be going nowhere unless they get the right price.

"The situation with Pascal has not changed," Jewell told the Sun.

"We've not had a bid of £4.5 million from anybody. Even if we did it would not be accepted.

"Chimbonda is worth £6 million, and that was before he made it into the France World Cup squad."

The JJB outfit are currently on a pre-season tour of Austria with the start of the new Premiership season still three weeks away.

New boy Emile Heskey has joined up with the squad after completing his £5.5 million move from relegated Birmingham City, and Jewell is anxious to instill some confidence in the powerful forward.

"Heskey has had his doubters but I believe, if he can start believing in himself, we've got one hell of a player," Jewell explained.

"Our club have over the last few years got the best out of players that maybe other people thought well 'he's past his best.'"

The Latics continue their pre-season friendlies in England when they face Barnsley at Oakwell on Tuesday.
