Boyce earmarked for right back

Emmerson Boyce admits he thinks he is earmarked for Pascal Chimbonda's right back slot in the Wigan Athletic side.

The new recruit from Crystal Palace is viewed as a straight replacement for the wantaway Frenchman, who is being strongly linked with a move to Tottenham after demanding a transfer at the end of last season.

Wigan fought off competition from other Premiership sides to land the versatile defender for an initial fee of £1 million.

"It's an ambitious club, an ambitious manager and an ambitious chairman," the 26-year-old informed Sky Sports News. "Look at the stadium and you can see that the club is going somewhere.

"Obviously, they had a successful season last year and I want to be part of that success this year.

"I can play right back, centre back or left back - wherever the manager wants to play me, I'll be happy to play. I think he's brought me here as a right back and hopefully I can cement a place down here and be successful with the fans and the club.

"Obviously, I thank Palace for giving me a chance before. I had some good times there but everyone wants to play in The Premiership and test yourselves against the best players.

"Hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to try and impress against better players and it'll be good experience. Everyone wants to play there - it's one of the best leagues in the world and I just can't wait to get started."

Boyce has signed a four-year contract at The JJB Stadium.
