Souness waits on McBride deal

Graeme Souness remains optimistic of luring US international striker Brian McBride to Blackburn Rovers during January's transfer window.

The Rovers boss wants to add Columbus Crew ace McBride to his attack in the New Year and is striving to thrash out a deal with MLS to make it happen.

Souness aims to bring in the 31-year-old on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move to Ewood Park next summer.

He admits talks are ongoing and believes former Everton loanee McBride will be the perfect acquisition for his strike force.

"We are talking to his agent and our chief executive is trying to push things along with the organisation over there but, as we speak, there is nothing new on it," commented Souness.

"We certainly want him to come in during the window for the remainder of the season and if he impresses we can look at a permanent deal.

"We've got four strikers we think are quite similar. McBride is a fantastic player, more of a target man, who can complement what we have got at the moment.

"We're like most other clubs in that if we're looking at doing anything in January, it will be a loan."

Meanwhile, Souness feels former Rovers midfielder David Dunn will not endure a hard time from his old team-mates when his present club Birmingham entertain Blackburn on Saturday.

"I wish I was playing and it was Souness v Dunn!" joked the Blackburn chief.

"He'll be excited about playing against his old mates and they'll be excited about playing against him.

"There will be friendly banter but that's what it's all about."
